MELISSA SHIFf (1967-2025)

A retrospective exhibition will be announced.

Passover Projections

Passover Projections inserts the audience into Cecil B. De Mille's iconic film The Ten Commandments. This pop projection enacts the mandate in the Haggadah that says one should feel as if you yourself were a slave in Egypt. In other words, one should identify with the oppressed.

Passover Projections was originally installed as part of Shiff's Time's Square Seder in one of the three storefront windows Shiff had access to for this performance art activist Passover project.

This element of Shiff's Times Square Seder became its own standalone piece, and Shiff titled it Passover Projections: Slaves to Memory. "Slaves to Memory" refers to the word Zahkor, which means "to remember." In the Haggadah, the ritual text read at every Passover Seder worldwide, we are encouraged to place ourselves in the subject position of the oppressed. In other words, to think of ourselves still as slaves and, in this way, never to enslave another people.

Shiff used Cecil B. De Mille's iconic scene where the Israelites are leaving Egyptian bondage through the parting of the Red Sea to insert the participants into the movie. She did so with the use of a video mixing board and a luma key effect. Therefore, Shiff literalized the line in the Haggadah, "Remember You were Slaves in Egypt."

Passover Projections: Slaves to Memory has been shown in various contexts. One of the most exciting exhibitions was at the music producer Michale Dorf's Festival of Freedom Seder where guests like Dr. Ruth, Matisyahu, Douglas Rushkoff, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, and the Rebbetzin Hadassah Gross all walked through The Red Sea.
